In memory of a wonderful guy that I only met for a very short time.....we shared many personal battles. His memory will live on in me forever.

I was in the store today to pick up a helmet for Danny and was shock to learn that we lost you. Our entire family loved to come to the store to oogle the bikes and be charmed by your infectious personality and intelligence. The last time you shared with me how well you were doing and the changes in your life. I'm sorry it didn't last. I will miss you and the lunch that I still owe you.

Dylan,
I will always remember your flair and panache. You had an infectious personality and fun seemed to never be far behind your presence. I am sorry to hear of your passing, but hope that you have found peace my friend.
One of the great human gifts is our ability to leave pieces of ourselves with others. You leave behind a legacy and many memories. You are fondly remembered. Rest in peace.
Clarke

I met Dylan in about fifth or sixth grade. We took the Eskimo ski bus to Winter Park. Sitting near the front of the bus, I ended up in the seat in front of Dylan. He had brought a tape recorder and was playing music. I turned around a politely asked him to turn it down, or better yet, off. He, less than politely, declined.
Dylan H. Smith was my childhood best friend from just about that point on. He helped me get my first job; took me to my first concert (The Clash at Red Rocks in 1984). He was everything I guy could want in a best friend.
He was never a morning person (many of the photos posted are of him sleeping). He used to come over to my house and spend Friday night. I would get up and get myself ready for Eskimos, then wake Dylan and walk him to the shower. It became a ritual.
The tape recorder became a boom box and we moved to the back of the bus. It was there that Dylan was the king of the bus. It was his domain.
Again on the slopes, Dylan was in his element. Our first run would be to take the cut over through the trees to Drunken Frenchman and ski down into Mary Jane. Like many times in Dylan’s life, he skied too fast and looked great right up until he was bit by a “snow snake” and exploded in a ball of powder. It was my job to ski down to him, picking up the pieces of a glove here, ski there and put him back together. Somehow his Walkman was always undamaged; Music held magical powers.
It was only years later that learned how notorious our Eskimo bus stop had become. Most adult riders were unpaid. The one for our bus either got something like the short straw or hazard pay. Maybe is was the loud music all the time; or, never being in a seat, locking anyone who dared go in the bathroom using a boot tree; the food fights from the candy shop in WP on the ride home. Maybe it was all of those things – all of those things were Dylan.
In the summers, Dylan would stay at my house and I would find other creative ways to wake him. He slept in my sister’s room after she had moved out of the house. The bed is far enough off the ground that I could easily slip underneath. One time I made ghost noises. Hearing him sit up, I waited until he was just about to fall back asleep and started again. One time, I found some firecrackers. No matter how I woke him, he was only mad for a minute or two. He was my best friend you see.
We would negotiate on where to spend important times like New Years Eve and birthdays. I almost always knew what he would get me – a cassette, then CD. It was always just what I wanted. Your best friend just knows these things or asks you bluntly. Easter egg hunts became a full-contact, tackle sport. You get to do these things with your best friend.

My son Sam didn’t want to go to the memorial today. I told him I had to say good-bye to an old friend. I told him that I had had my Dylan Smith and hoped that he would find his. He seemed to understand and went along for the ride. You do that with your best friend.

I never met Dylan and am too late now to attend the services but my heart goes out to Martha, and the rest of the family. Dylan must have been wonderful person because he had such a wonderful Mom. May God love him and keep him close.
With deepest sympathy,
Sally

We are saddened today to learn of Dylan's passing - we didn't know him, but know his dear Mother well - and share her sadness in our hearts too. We know that those we have loved continue to live on in our hearts & memories. May Martha and her family be comforted by all the love and support of so many who truly care and send their heartfelt love and prayers.
